Il celibato è volontariamente non sposato, sessualmente abituato o entrambi, di solito per motivi religiosi. Spesso è in associazione al ruolo di un funzionario religioso o di un devoto. Nel suo senso stretto, il termine celibato è applicato solo a coloro che lo stato non sposato è il risultato di un voto sacro, di atto di rinuncia o di convinzione religiosa. In senso più ampio, è comunemente inteso solo significare l'astinenza dall'attività sessuale. Il celibato è esistito in una forma o nell'altra durante la storia, in quasi tutte le principali religioni del mondo, e le opinioni su di esso sono varie. Anche gli atteggiamenti islamici verso il celibato sono stati complessi; Muhammad lo ha denunciato, ma alcuni ordini Sufi lo abbracciano.
