Morte clinica
La morte clinica è il termine medico per la cessazione della circolazione del sangue e della respirazione, i due criteri necessari per sostenere la vita umana e molti altri organismi. Si verifica quando il cuore smette di battere in un ritmo regolare, una condizione chiamata arresto cardiaco. Il termine è anche usato talvolta nella ricerca di rianimazione. La circolazione sanguigna è stata storicamente dimostrata irreversibile nella maggior parte dei casi. Prima dell'invenzione della rianimazione cardiopolmonare, della defibrillazione, dell'iniezione di epinefrina e di altri trattamenti nel XX secolo, l'assenza di circolazione del sangue era storicamente considerata la definizione ufficiale della morte. Con l'avvento di queste strategie, l'arresto cardiaco è stato chiamato morto clinico, piuttosto che morte, per riflettere la possibilità di riaccensione post-arresto.
