Un cono è una forma geometrica tridimensionale che si uniforma senza problemi da una base piatta ad un punto chiamato l'apice o il vertice. Più precisamente, è la figura solida delimitata da una base in un piano e da una superficie formata dal locus di tutti i segmenti di linea retta che uniscono l'apice al perimetro della base. Il termine "cono" a volte si riferisce solo alla superficie di questa figura solida, o solo alla superficie laterale. L'asse di un cono è la linea retta, che passa attraverso l'apice, di cui la base ha una simmetria di rotazione. In uso comune in geometria elementare, i coni sono considerati giusti circolari, dove circolare significa che la base è un cerchio e un diritto significa che l'asse passa attraverso il centro della base ad angolo retto al suo piano. Contrasti con coni giusti sono coni obliqui, in cui l'asse non passa perpendicolarmente attraverso il centro della base.
