Nella filosofia e nella logica, la contingenza è lo stato di proposizioni che non sono né vere sotto ogni possibile valutazione né falsa sotto ogni possibile valutazione. Una proposta contingente non è necessariamente vero né necessariamente falsa. Le proposizioni che sono contingenti possono essere così perché contengono connettori logici che, insieme al valore della verità di una delle sue parti atomiche, determinano il valore della verità della proposizione. Questo significa che il valore della verità della proposizione è contingente ai valori di verità delle frasi che lo compongono. Le proposte contingenti dipendono dai fatti, mentre le proposizioni analitiche sono vere, senza riguardo a fatti di cui parlano. Oltre alle proposte contingenti, esistono almeno altre tre categorie di proposte, alcune delle quali si sovrappongono: ▪ proposizioni tautologiche, che devono essere vere, non importa quali siano o potrebbero essere le circostanze. ▪ Contraddizioni che devono necessariamente essere false, non importa quali siano o potrebbero essere le circostanze. ▪ Possibili proposizioni, che sono vere o avrebbero potuto essere vere date alcune circostanze.
