Curva
Nella matematica, una curva è, generalmente, un oggetto simile a una linea, ma non necessaria per essere dritto. Ciò comporta che una linea è un caso speciale di curva, vale a dire una curva con curvatura nullo. Spesso le curve nello spazio euclideo bidimensionale o tridimensionale sono di interesse. Diverse discipline all'interno della matematica hanno dato il termine significati diversi a seconda dell'area di studio, quindi il significato preciso dipende dal contesto. Tuttavia molti di questi significati sono casi speciali della definizione che segue. Una curva è uno spazio topologico localmente homeomorfico a una linea. Nel linguaggio quotidiano, ciò significa che una curva è un insieme di punti che, vicino ad ognuno dei suoi punti, sembra una linea, fino ad una deformazione. Un esempio semplice di una curva è la parabola, mostrata a destra. Un gran numero di altre curve è stato studiato in più campi matematici. Il termine curva ha diversi significati anche nel linguaggio non matematico. Ad esempio, può essere quasi sinonimo di funzione matematica o grafico di una funzione.
