Deadlock

Un deadlock è una situazione in cui due o più azioni concorrenti sono in attesa che l'altra finisca, e quindi non lo fa mai. In un database transazionale, si verifica un blocco quando due processi ciascuno all'interno della propria transazione aggiorna due file di informazioni, ma nell'ordine opposto. Ad esempio, il processo A aggiorna la riga 1 poi la riga 2 nel processo temporale B che aggiorna la riga 2 poi la riga 1. Il processo A non riesce a completare l'aggiornamento della riga 2 finché il processo B non è terminato, ma non può finire di aggiornare la riga 1 finché il processo A finisce . Non importa quanto tempo è permesso di passare, questa situazione non si risolverà mai e per questo sistema di gestione dei database in genere ucciderà la transazione del processo che ha fatto la meno quantità di lavoro. In un sistema operativo, un deadlock è una situazione che si verifica quando un processo o un thread entrano in uno stato di attesa perché una risorsa richiesta viene tenuta da un altro processo di attesa che a sua volta sta aspettando un'altra risorsa. Se un processo non è in grado di modificare il suo stato a tempo indeterminato, poiché le risorse richieste da esso vengono utilizzate da un altro processo di attesa, si dice che il sistema sia in un deadlock.

A deadlock is a situation in which two or more competing actions are each waiting for the other to finish, and thus neither ever does. In a transactional database, a deadlock happens when two processes each within its own transaction updates two rows of information but in the opposite order. For example, process A updates row 1 then row 2 in the exact timeframe process B updates row 2 then row 1. Process A can't finish updating row 2 until process B is finished, but it cannot finish updating row 1 until process A finishes. No matter how much time is allowed to pass, this situation will never resolve itself and because of this database management systems will typically kill the transaction of the process that has done the least amount of work. In an operating system, a deadlock is a situation which occurs when a process or thread enters a waiting state because a resource requested is being held by another waiting process, which in turn is waiting for another resource. If a process is unable to change its state indefinitely because the resources requested by it are being used by another waiting process, then the system is said to be in a deadlock.
