Nella linguistica, la diglossia si riferisce ad una situazione in cui due dialetti o linguaggi di solito correlati vengono utilizzati da una sola comunità linguistica. Oltre alla varietà linguistica quotidiana o vernacolare della comunità, viene utilizzata una seconda varietà molto codificata in alcune situazioni come la letteratura, l'istruzione formale o altre impostazioni specifiche, ma non utilizzate per la conversazione ordinaria. L'alta varietà può essere uno stadio più vecchio della stessa lingua, o un distinto ancora strettamente correlato dialetto attualmente presente.
