Nella matematica, un'ellisse è una curva su un piano che circonda due punti focali, in modo tale che una retta tracciata da uno dei punti focali a qualsiasi punto della curva e poi all'indietro all'altro punto focale abbia la stessa lunghezza per ogni punto del punto curva. In quanto tale, è una generalizzazione di un cerchio, che è un tipo speciale di un'ellisse che ha entrambi i punti focali nella stessa posizione.
