Epodo
Epode, in versetto, è la terza parte di un'ode, che ha seguito la strophe e l'antistrofo, e ha completato il movimento. A un certo punto i cori, che precedentemente avevano cantato a destra dell'altare o del palcoscenico, e poi a sinistra di esso, univano e cantarono in unione, o permettevano al coryphaeus di cantare per tutti loro, mentre stava al centro. Con l'apparizione di Stesichorus e l'evoluzione della lirica corale, in Grecia cominciarono a coltivare una poesia appresa e artificiale, e si creò una nuova forma, l'epode-song. Si trattava di un verso del trimetro iambico, seguita da un versetto di iambic dimeter, ed è stato riferito che, anche se l'epodene è stato portato alla sua massima perfezione da Stesichorus, un poeta precedente, Archiloco, è stato davvero l'inventore di questa forma. L'epode presto ha preso un posto fermo nella poesia corale, che ha perso quando quel ramo della letteratura è diminuito. Ma essa si estendeva oltre l'ode e nei primi drammatisti troviamo numerosi esempi di monologhi e di dialoghi incorniciati sul sistema epodico. Nella poesia latina, l'epodo è stato coltivato, in arcaismo cosciente, sia come parte dell'odio sia come un ramo indipendente della poesia.
