L'escrezione è il processo attraverso il quale i prodotti di scarto di metabolismo e altri materiali non utili vengono eliminati da un organismo. Nei vertebrati si eseguono principalmente i polmoni, i reni e la pelle. Ciò è in contrasto con la secrezione, in cui la sostanza può avere compiti specifici dopo aver lasciato la cella. L'escrezione è un processo essenziale in tutte le forme di vita. Nei mammiferi l'urina viene eseguita attraverso l'uretra e fa parte del sistema escretorio. Le piante producono anidride carbonica e acqua come rifiuti respiratori. Nelle piante verdi, l'anidride carbonica rilasciata durante la respirazione viene utilizzata durante la fotosintesi. L'ossigeno può essere considerato come un prodotto di scarto generato durante la fotosintesi ed esce attraverso stomata, pareti delle cellule radice e altri percorsi. Le piante possono sbarazzarsi di acqua in eccesso mediante traspirazione e guttazione. È stato dimostrato che la foglia funge da "escretoforo" e, oltre ad essere organo primario della fotosintesi di un vegetale verde, è anche usata come metodo vegetale di escrezione di rifiuti tossici.
