Nella geologia, una facies è un corpo di roccia con caratteristiche specifiche. Idealmente, una facies è un'unità rock distintiva che si forma sotto determinate condizioni di sedimentazione, che riflette un particolare processo o ambiente. Il termine facies è stato introdotto dal geologo svizzero Amanz Gressly nel 1838 e faceva parte del suo importante contributo alle fondamenta della moderna stratigrafia, che ha sostituito le nozioni precedenti del Neptunism.
