Fail-safe
Un dispositivo fail-safe o fail-safe è quello che, in caso di guasto, risponde in modo da non causare alcun danno, o almeno un minimo di danno, ad altri dispositivi o pericolo per il personale. Fail-safe e fail-safe sono concetti simili ma distinti. Fail-safe significa che un dispositivo non metterà in pericolo la vita o le proprietà quando non riesce. Fail-secure significa che l'accesso oi dati non cadranno nelle mani sbagliate in un guasto. A volte gli approcci suggeriscono soluzioni opposte. Ad esempio, se un edificio cattura il fuoco, i sistemi fail-safe potrebbero sbloccare le porte per assicurare una rapida fuga e consentire ai vigili del fuoco all'interno, mentre il fail-safe bloccherà le porte per impedire l'accesso non autorizzato all'edificio. Significativamente, malgrado la credenza popolare al contrario, un sistema di "fail-safe" non significa che il fallimento sia impossibile / improbabile, ma piuttosto che il disegno del sistema impedisca o attenua le conseguenze non sicure del fallimento del sistema. Cioè se e quando un sistema "fail-safe" fallisce, è "sicuro" o almeno non meno sicuro di quando funziona correttamente.
