Un tiratore di messa a fuoco, o la prima assistente della macchina fotografica, è membro di un reparto di macchina dell'equipaggio di film che ha la principale responsabilità di mantenere la nitidezza dell'immagine su qualunque oggetto o azione sia filmato. "Messa a fuoco di messa a fuoco" o "messa a fuoco del rack" si riferisce all'atto di cambiare l'impostazione della distanza di messa a fuoco dell'obiettivo in corrispondenza della distanza fisica del soggetto in movimento dal piano focale. Ad esempio, se un attore si sposta da 8 m dal piano focale a 3 m dal piano focale all'interno di un colpo, l'attuatore di messa a fuoco cambia l'impostazione della distanza sull'obiettivo durante la presa in corrispondenza precisa della posizione di cambio attore. Inoltre, l'attuatore di messa a fuoco può spostare la messa a fuoco da un soggetto all'altro all'interno del telaio, come dettato dai requisiti specifici del tiro. Un buon focus puller avrà una conoscenza intima della teoria cinematografica e ottica. A seconda dei parametri di un dato tiro, spesso non c'è molto spazio per errori. Come tale, il ruolo di un puller di messa a fuoco è estremamente importante all'interno del regno di una produzione cinematografica; Un'immagine "morbida", nella maggior parte delle circostanze, sarà considerata inutilizzabile, in quanto non è possibile risolvere un tale errore nella post-produzione.
