Gerbera L. è un genere di piante ornamentali della famiglia dei girasoli. Fu chiamato in onore del botanico tedesco e naturalista Traugott Gerber che viaggiò ampiamente in Russia e fu amico di Carolus Linnaeus. Ha circa 30 specie in selvaggina, estendendosi verso Sud America, Africa e Asia tropicale. La prima descrizione scientifica di una Gerbera è stata fatta da J.D. Hooker nella rivista botanica di Curtis nel 1889 quando descrisse Gerbera jamesonii, una specie sudafricana conosciuta anche come Margherita Transvaal o Barberton Daisy. Gerbera è comunemente noto anche come la Daisy africana. Le specie di Gerbera recano un grande capitulum con fiorellini a raggiera a due labbra in colori gialli, arancioni, bianchi, rosa o rossi. Il capitulum, che ha l'aspetto di un unico fiore, è in realtà composto da centinaia di fiori individuali. La morfologia dei fiori varia a seconda della loro posizione nel capitulum. Le teste di fiori possono essere piccole come 7 cm di diametro o fino a 12 cm. Gerbera è molto popolare e ampiamente utilizzata come pianta da giardino decorativa o come fiori tagliati.
