Romanizzazione (culturale)
La romanizzazione o la latinizzazione - nei significati storici e culturali di entrambi i termini - indicano diversi processi storici, come l'acculturazione, l'integrazione e l'assimilazione di popolazioni di nuova costituzione e periferiche da parte della Repubblica Romana e del successivo Impero Romano. L'antica storiografia romana e la storiografia italiana fino al periodo fascista chiamarono questi diversi processi la "civiltà dei barbari". L'acculturazione procede dall'alto verso il basso, le classi superiori adottano innanzitutto la cultura romana ei vecchi modi più lunghi nei distretti opposti tra i contadini. Gli ostaggi hanno giocato un ruolo importante in questo processo, poiché i bambini elitari, dalla Mauretania alla Gallia, sono stati portati ad essere sollevati e educati a Roma. L'antica storiografia romana e la storiografia italiana tradizionalmente identificarono con sicurezza i diversi processi coinvolti in una "civiltà dei barbari". Gli storici moderni hanno una visione più sfumata: facendo la loro pace con Roma, le élite locali potrebbero rendere la loro posizione più sicura e rafforzare il loro prestigio. Nuovi temi includono lo studio dei valori personali e di gruppo e la costruzione dell'identità, l'aspetto personale dell'etnogenesi.
