Il matrimonio di Levirate è un tipo di matrimonio in cui il fratello di un defunto è obbligato a sposare la vedova di suo fratello e la vedova è obbligata a sposare il fratello del marito defunto. Il matrimonio levirato è stato praticato da società con una forte struttura di clan in cui è stato vietato il matrimonio esogame. È stato conosciuto in molte società in tutto il mondo. La pratica è simile alla eredità di vedova, dove, ad esempio, i parenti del marito deceduto possono dettare chi la vedova può sposarsi. Il termine è un derivato della parola latina levir, che significa "fratello del marito".
