Marasmo è una forma di grave malnutrizione caratterizzata da carenza energetica. Un bambino con il marasmo sembra emaciato. Il peso corporeo è ridotto a meno del 60% del peso corporeo normale per l'età. La presenza di Marasmo aumenta prima dell'età 1, mentre la comparsa di kwashiorkor aumenta dopo 18 mesi. Può essere distinto dal kwashiorkor in quanto il kwashiorkor è carenza di proteine con un'adeguata assunzione di energia mentre il marasmo è inadeguata l'assunzione di energia in tutte le forme, tra cui proteine. La perdita di proteine in kwashiorkor può portare ad un edema. La prognosi è migliore di quella per il kwashiorkor ma la metà dei bambini gravemente malnutriti muore a causa della mancanza di un trattamento adeguato.
