Il contrassegno, un termine che ha origine in linguistica, è lo stato di distinguersi come inusuale o difficile rispetto ad una forma più comune o regolare. In una relazione marcata / non marcata, un termine di opposizione è quello più ampio e dominante. La forma dominante predefinita o minima è conosciuta come termine "non marcato" e l'altro, secondario è il termine "marcato". In altre parole, è la caratterizzazione di un'unità linguistica "normale" rispetto alle possibili forme "irregolari" dell'unità. Ad esempio, in inglese, verbi irregolari sono contrassegnati, mentre i verbi regolari sono contrassegnati dal contrassegno. Nella linguistica, la contrassegnazione può applicare, tra le altre, opposizioni fonologiche, grammaticali e semantiche, definendole in termini di opposizioni "marcate" e "non marcate" come oneste e disoneste. La marcatura può essere puramente semantica o può essere realizzata come morfologia extra. Il termine deriva dalla "marcatura" di un ruolo grammaticale con un suffisso o un altro elemento, ma è stato esteso a situazioni in cui non c'è distinzione morfologica.
