Nella psicologia, la memoria è il processo in cui le informazioni sono codificate, memorizzate e recuperate. L'encoding consente alle informazioni che sono dal mondo esterno di raggiungere i nostri sensi nelle forme di stimoli chimici e fisici. In questa prima fase dobbiamo cambiare le informazioni affinché possiamo mettere la memoria nel processo di codifica. L'archiviazione è la seconda fase o processo di memoria. Ciò implica che manteniamo informazioni su periodi di tempo. Infine il terzo processo è il recupero di informazioni che abbiamo memorizzato. Dobbiamo individuarlo e riportarlo alla nostra coscienza. Alcuni tentativi di recupero possono essere sforzati a causa del tipo di informazioni. Da una prospettiva di elaborazione dell'informazione ci sono tre fasi principali nella formazione e nel recupero della memoria: ▪ codifica o registrazione: ricezione, elaborazione e combinazione delle informazioni ricevute ▪ archiviazione: creazione di un record permanente delle informazioni codificate ▪ recupero, richiamo o ricordo: Richiamando le informazioni memorizzate in risposta a qualche indicazione per essere utilizzati in un processo o un'attività La perdita di memoria è descritta come dimenticanza o come disordine medico, amnesia.
