Newgate era una delle storiche sette porte del Muro di Londra attorno alla città di Londra e uno dei sei che risalgono agli epoca romana. Da essa, una strada romana si diresse ad ovest a Silchester, Hampshire. Gli scavi del 1875, del 1903 e del 1909 rivelarono la struttura romana e mostravano che si trattava di una doppia strada tra due torri di guardia squadrate. Dal XII secolo, almeno, il cancello fu usato come prigione per debitori e criminali. Questa, la famigerata prigione di Newgate, è stata successivamente estesa a sud nel sito della moderna Corte Criminale Centrale di Old Bailey. Il cancello fu demolito nel 1767. Newgate Street, oggi parte del percorso A40 da Londra a Fishguard, si trova in gran parte all'interno della parete della città, che porta a ovest da Cheapside al sito del cancello vecchio e poi prosegue su viadotto di Holborn nel punto in cui L'arteria Old Bailey si unisce a sud e la strada di Giltspur a nord. Una notevole scoperta qui era una tegola romana inscritta con un commento scoraggiante che "Austalis sta andando da solo per 13 giorni". A nord della strada sono le rovine di Christ Church Greyfriars sul sito di un monastero francescano medioevale.
