Un nighthawk è un uccello notturno della sottofamiglia Chordeilinae, all'interno della famiglia notturna, Caprimulgidae. Nighthawks sono di medie dimensioni con ali lunghe, gambe corte e bollette molto brevi. Solitamente si trovano a terra. Si nutrono di insetti volanti. Il Least Nighthawk, a 16 centimetri e 23 grammi, è il più piccolo di tutti i Caprimulgiformes.
