Ninhydrin è una sostanza chimica utilizzata per rilevare ammoniaca o ammine primarie e secondarie. Quando si reagiscono con queste amine libere, viene prodotto un colore blu o viola profondo conosciuto come purple di Ruhemann. Ninhydrin è comunemente usato per rilevare le impronte digitali, in quanto le amine terminali di residui di lisina nei peptidi e nelle proteine scoraggiate nelle impronte digitali reagiscono con ninidrina. Si tratta di un solido bianco che è solubile in etanolo e in acetone a temperatura ambiente. Ninhidrina può essere considerata come l'idrato dell'indano-1,2,3-trione.
