La paratassi è una tecnica letteraria, in forma scritta o parlante, che favorisce frasi corte e semplici, con l'utilizzo di congiunzioni coordinate piuttosto che subordinate. Viene usato anche per descrivere una tecnica di poesia in cui due immagini o frammenti, di solito immagini dissimili o frammenti, sono giustapposte senza una chiara connessione. I lettori sono quindi lasciati a fare le proprie connessioni implicite dalla sintassi paratica. Ezra Pound, nel suo adattamento della poesia cinese e giapponese, ha reso la giusta corrispondenza delle immagini una parte importante della poesia della lingua inglese.
