Fisionomia
La fisionomia è la valutazione del carattere o della personalità di una persona dal suo aspetto esterno, in particolare nel volto. Il termine può anche riferirsi all'aspetto generale di una persona, un oggetto o un terreno, senza riferirsi alle sue caratteristiche implicite, come nella fisionomia di una comunità vegetale. La credenza di tale studio ha variato di volta in volta. La pratica è stata ben accettata dagli antichi filosofi greci, ma è caduto in disappunto nel Medioevo quando è stata praticata da vagabondi e banchi da banco. Fu poi rivitalizzato e diffuso da Johann Kaspar Lavater prima di cadere dal favore di nuovo alla fine del XIX secolo. La fisiognomia come intesa nel passato incontra la definizione contemporanea di una pseudoscienza. Nessuna evidenza chiara indica le opere di fisionomia, anche se recenti studi hanno suggerito che le apparenze facciali "contengono un kernel di verità" sulla personalità di una persona. La fisiognomia è anche a volte chiamata antroposcopia, anche se l'espressione è più comune nel XIX secolo quando la parola è nata.
