Placenta
La placenta è un organo che collega il feto in via di sviluppo alla parete uterina per consentire l'assorbimento dei nutrienti, l'eliminazione dei rifiuti e lo scambio di gas attraverso la fornitura di sangue della madre, combattere contro l'infezione interna e produrre ormoni per supportare la gravidanza. Placentas sono una caratteristica definente dei mammiferi placentari, ma si trovano anche in alcuni non-mammiferi con diversi livelli di sviluppo. Si noti, però, che l'omologia di tali strutture in vari organismi viviparali è discutibile e, in invertebrati come l'Arthropoda, è al meglio analoga. La parola placenta deriva dalla parola latina per la torta, dal greco plakóenta / plakoúnta, accusativo di plakóeis / plakoús - πλακόεις, πλακούς, "piatto, lastra simile", in riferimento al suo aspetto rotondo e piatto nell'uomo. Il plurale classico è placentae, ma le placentas della forma sono comuni nell'inglese moderno e probabilmente hanno la più vasta valuta attualmente. I mammiferi prototipali e metateriali producono una placenta choriovitellina che, collegata alla parete uterina, fornisce sostanze nutritive derivanti principalmente dal sacco di uova.
