Plasmodesmata sono canali microscopici che attraversano le pareti cellulari delle cellule vegetali e di alcune cellule algali, consentendo il trasporto e la comunicazione tra di essi. Plasmodesmata si è evoluta indipendentemente in varie linee, e le specie che hanno queste strutture includono membri di Charophyceae, Charales, Coleochaetales e Phaeophyceae, nonché tutti gli embrioni, meglio noti come piante terrestri. A differenza delle cellule animali, ogni cellula vegetale è circondata da una parete cellulare di polisaccaridi. Le cellule vegetali confinanti sono quindi separate da una coppia di pareti cellulari e dalla lamella intermedia intermedia, formando un dominio extracellulare noto come apoplast. Anche se le pareti cellulari sono permeabili a piccole proteine solubili e altri soluti, i plasmodesmata consentono il trasporto intercellulare diretto, regolamentato e simplastico di sostanze tra le cellule. Ci sono due forme di plasmodesmata: plasmodesmata primari, che si formano durante la divisione cellulare e plasmodesmata secondari, che possono formarsi tra le cellule mature. Strutture simili, chiamate giunzioni di giunzione e nanotubi di membrana, cellule animali interconnesse e stromuli si formano tra plastidi nelle cellule vegetali.
