Ransom è la pratica di tenere un prigioniero o un oggetto per estorcere soldi o proprietà per assicurare la loro liberazione, oppure può riferirsi alla somma dei soldi coinvolti. In una prima legge tedesca, un concetto simile è stato chiamato weregild. Quando il riscatto significa "pagamento", la parola viene attraverso il vecchio francese rançon da latino redemptio = "acquisto indietro": confronta "redenzione". Nel riscatto del giudaismo si chiama kofer-nefesh. Tra gli altri usi, la parola è stata applicata alla tassa sondaggio di un mezzo shekel per essere pagata da ogni maschio di venti anni al censimento.
