Nella reciprocità della fotografia è la relazione inversa tra l'intensità e la durata della luce che determina la reazione del materiale sensibile alla luce. All'interno di un normale range di esposizione per le pellicole, ad esempio, la legge di reciprocità afferma che la risposta del film sarà determinata dall'esposizione totale, definita come intensità × tempo. Pertanto, la stessa risposta può derivare dalla riduzione della durata e dall'aumentare dell'intensità luminosa e viceversa. La relazione reciproca è assunta nella maggior parte delle sensitometrie, ad esempio quando si misura una curva Hurter e Driffield per un'emulsione fotografica. L'esposizione totale della pellicola o del sensore, prodotto del tempo di esposizione dei tempi di illuminazione del piano focale, viene misurata in lux secondi.
