I Redpolls sono un gruppo di piccoli uccelli passerini nella famiglia finchiglia Fringillidae che hanno caratteristici marcature rosse sulle loro teste. Essi erano stati precedentemente collocati nel genere Acanthis insieme ai linnets e al twite, ma i loro parenti più vicini sono in realtà i crossbills, che sono collocati nel genere Loxia. Quest'ultimo genere potrebbe essere fuso con Carduelis in un unico genere, per cui il nome Loxia avrebbe allora la priorità. Ma ciò significherebbe cambiare il nome di un gran numero di specie, e poiché i loro adattamenti e biogeografia sono evoluzionariamente peculiari, sarebbe meglio ripristinare invece Acanthis, inclusi solo i redpolls. Ci sono diverse forme strettamente legate di redpolls che potrebbero essere considerate come qualsiasi cosa da una a cinque specie. Studi recenti tendono a sostenere tre specie, ma questo non è certamente definito. Tutti i redpolls sono specie boscose ripartite in nord, associate a betulle. Sono piccoli uccelli, marroni o marroni grigi sopra e con una patch rossa di fronte.
