La Pietra Rosetta è una stele granodiorita inscritta con un decreto rilasciato a Memphis nel 196 aC per conto di Re Tolomeo V. Il decreto appare in tre sceneggiature: il testo superiore è i geroglifici antichi egiziani, la parte centrale della scrittura demotica e il più basso antico greco . Poiché presenta sostanzialmente lo stesso testo in tutti e tre gli script, essa ha fornito la chiave per la comprensione moderna dei geroglifici egiziani. Anche se si crede che sia stato originariamente mostrato all'interno di un tempio, probabilmente a Sais vicina, la pietra è stata probabilmente spostata durante il periodo precoce cristiano o medievale ed è stata infine utilizzata come materiale da costruzione nella costruzione di Fort Julien vicino alla città di Rashid nel Delta del Nilo. Fu riscoperta nel 1799 da un soldato, Pierre-François Bouchard, della spedizione napoleonica in Egitto. Come il primo testo bilingue antico egiziano recuperato nei tempi moderni, la Pietra Rosetta ha suscitato un'interessante interesse pubblico con il suo potenziale per decifrare questa antica lingua antica non tradotta.
