La laicità è lo stato di essere separato dalla religione, o non essere unicamente alleato con o contro una particolare religione. Ad esempio, mangiare e bagnare possono essere considerati esempi di attività secolari, perché non può esserci qualcosa di intrinsecamente religioso. Tuttavia, sia mangiare che bagnare sono considerati sacramenti in alcune tradizioni religiose, e quindi sarebbero attività religiose in quelle visioni del mondo. Dare una preghiera derivata da un testo religioso o una dottrina, adorando attraverso il contesto di una religione e frequentando una scuola religiosa sono esempi di attività religiose.
