Secularization

La secolarizzazione o secolarizzazione è la trasformazione di una società da una stretta identificazione con valori e istituzioni religiose verso valori non religiosi e istituzioni secolari. La tesi di laicizzazione si riferisce alla convinzione che, come le società procedono, soprattutto attraverso la modernizzazione e la razionalizzazione, la religione perde la sua autorità in tutti gli aspetti della vita sociale e della governance. Il termine secolarizzazione viene utilizzato anche nel contesto del sollevamento delle restrizioni monastiche da parte di un membro del clero. La secolarizzazione ha molti livelli di significato, sia come teoria che come processo storico. I teorici sociali come Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, Max Weber e Émile Durkheim hanno affermato che la modernizzazione della società includerebbe un calo dei livelli di religiosità. Lo studio di questo processo cerca di determinare il modo in cui, o la misura in cui i credo religiosi, le pratiche e le istituzioni stanno perdendo significato sociale. Alcuni teorici sostengono che la secolarizzazione della civiltà moderna deriva in parte dalla nostra incapacità di adattare le ampie esigenze etiche e spirituali dell'umanità al progressivo progresso delle scienze fisiche.

Secularization or secularisation is the transformation of a society from close identification with religious values and institutions toward nonreligious values and secular institutions. The secularization thesis refers to the belief that as societies progress, particularly through modernization and rationalization, religion loses its authority in all aspects of social life and governance. The term secularization is also used in the context of the lifting of the monastic restrictions from a member of the clergy. Secularization has many levels of meaning, both as a theory and a historical process. Social theorists such as Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, Max Weber, and Émile Durkheim, postulated that the modernization of society would include a decline in levels of religiosity. Study of this process seeks to determine the manner in which, or extent to which religious creeds, practices and institutions are losing social significance. Some theorists argue that the secularization of modern civilization partly results from our inability to adapt broad ethical and spiritual needs of mankind to the increasingly fast advance of the physical sciences.
