Suono stereofonico
Il suono stereofonico o, più comunemente, lo stereo, è un metodo di riproduzione sonora che crea un'illusione di direzione e di prospettiva udibile. Questo è di solito ottenuto utilizzando due o più canali audio indipendenti attraverso una configurazione di due o più altoparlanti in modo da creare l'impressione di un suono udito da varie direzioni, come nell'audizione naturale. Così il termine "stereofonico" si applica ai cosiddetti sistemi "quadrafonici" e "surround" e ai più comuni sistemi a due canali a due diffusori. È spesso contrasta con il suono monofonico o "mono", dove l'audio è in forma di un canale, spesso centrato nel campo sonoro. Il suono stereo è ormai diffuso in sistemi di intrattenimento come la radio e la TV, la musica registrata e il cinema. La parola stereofonica deriva dal greco "στερεός", "duro, solido" + "φωνή", "suono, tono, voce" ed è stato coniato nel 1927 da Western Electric, per analogia con la parola "stereoscopico".
