CHE SIGNIFICA STOMA IN INGLESE
Stoma
Nella botanica, uno stoma è un poro, trovato nell'epidermide di foglie, steli e altri organi che viene utilizzato per controllare lo scambio di gas. Il poro è delimitato da un paio di cellule di parenchima specializzate conosciute come cellule di protezione che sono responsabili della regolazione della dimensione dell'apertura. Il termine è anche usato collettivamente per riferirsi ad un intero complesso stomatico, sia il pore stesso che le relative cellule di guardia. L'aria contenente anidride carbonica e ossigeno entra nell'impianto attraverso queste aperture e viene utilizzata in fotosintesi nelle cellule mesofiliche e nella respirazione, rispettivamente. L'ossigeno prodotto come sottoprodotto di fotosintesi diffonde all'atmosfera attraverso queste stesse aperture. Inoltre, il vapore acqueo viene rilasciato nell'atmosfera attraverso questi pori in un processo chiamato traspirazione. Le stomate sono presenti nella generazione di sporofiti di tutti i gruppi di piante terrestri tranne i fegati. Dicotiledoni hanno solitamente più stomata sull'epidermide inferiore dell'epidermide superiore. I monocotiledoni, d'altra parte, hanno generalmente lo stesso numero di stomata sui due epidermi.
