Un'ala protetta è una pianta a forma di ala favorita per elevate velocità subsoniche e supersoniche e si trova su quasi tutti gli aerei a reazione in una forma o nell'altro, nonché alcuni velivoli ad elica ad alta velocità. Rispetto alle ali dritte comuni agli aeromobili più lenti, essi hanno una radice di "ala" verso la direzione del wingtip angolata oltre l'asse spanwise. Questo ha l'effetto di ritardare l'aumento della trazione causato dalla compressività del fluido vicino alla velocità del suono, aumentando le prestazioni.
