Telex
La rete telex è una rete commutata di teleprinters simili a una rete telefonica, per l'invio di messaggi basati su testo. Il termine si riferisce alla rete, non ai teleprinters; I sistemi di telecontrollo punto-punto erano stati utilizzati molto prima che gli scambi di telex venissero formati a partire dagli anni Trenta. I teleprinters si sono evoluti da sistemi telegrafici e, come il telegrafo, hanno usato la presenza o l'assenza di un livello di corrente prefissato per rappresentare i simboli di spazio o di spazio. Questo è al contrario del sistema telefonico analogico, che utilizza tensioni diverse per codificare le informazioni sulla frequenza. Per questo motivo gli scambi di telex erano interamente separati dal sistema telefonico, con i propri standard di segnalazione, scambi e sistema di "numeri di telex". Quando l'apparecchiatura di scambio di telefono e telex è stata localizzata, cosa che non è stata rara, i diversi sistemi di segnalazione a volte causerebbero interferenze. Telex ha fornito il primo mezzo comune per le comunicazioni record internazionali utilizzando tecniche di segnalazione standard e criteri di funzionamento come specificato dall'Unione internazionale delle telecomunicazioni.
