Terroir è l'insieme di caratteristiche particolari che la geografia, la geologia e il clima di un determinato luogo, che interagiscono con la genetica vegetale, esprimono in prodotti agricoli come il vino, il caffè, il cioccolato, il luppolo, i pomodori, il frumento ereditario e il tè. Il concetto ha anche attraversato altre denominazioni d'origine protette, prodotti come i formaggi. Terroir può essere tradotto in modo molto laborioso come "un senso del luogo", che è incarnato in alcune qualità caratteristiche, la somma degli effetti che l'ambiente locale ha avuto sulla produzione del prodotto. Terroir è spesso corsivo in inglese per dimostrare che è un prestito francese. Il concetto di terroir è alla base del sistema francese denominato Appellation d'Origine contrôlée che è stato il modello per le denominazioni e le leggi del vino in tutto il mondo.
