Il tonnellaggio è una misura della capacità di carico di una nave. Il termine deriva dalla tassazione pagata su tuns o botti di vino, ed è stata successivamente utilizzata in riferimento al peso di un carico di una nave; Tuttavia, nel moderno uso marittimo, "tonnellaggio" si riferisce specificamente a un calcolo del volume o del carico di una nave. Il tonnellaggio non deve essere confuso con lo spostamento, che si riferisce al peso reale della nave. L'altra definizione di tonnellaggio è il peso del carico di una nave mercantile. Il tonnellaggio è anche la quantità totale di spedizione di un porto o di una nazione, stimata dalla capacità delle sue navi.
