valedictorian
Valedictorian è un titolo accademico conferito allo studente che fornisce la dichiarazione di chiusura o di addio ad una cerimonia di laurea. Il valedictorian scelto è di solito lo studente con la più alta classifica tra la sua laurea. Il termine è una derivazione anglicata del latino vale dicere, storicamente radicato nel ruolo tradizionale del valedictorian come ultimo oratore alla cerimonia di laurea. Quindi l'indirizzo valedictory in genere è considerato un addio finale ai compagni di classe, prima che si disperdano per perseguire i loro percorsi individuali dopo la laurea. Il termine è più utilizzato negli Stati Uniti, in Canada e nelle Filippine. Il suo equivalente in Brasile è Orador. In Australia, Nuova Zelanda, Sudafrica, Islanda e Scozia non viene utilizzato il titolo valedictorian, viene utilizzato un titolo dux per lo studente più alto. In Francia viene utilizzato il termine Major de promotion, sebbene il termine non sia correlato a nessun ruolo cerimoniale, in quanto raramente si tengono cerimonie di laurea in scuole o università.
