Nella definizione di musica, un contralto o contralto è un cantante in un ambiente sonoro tra suoni tenore e mezzosoprano. Questo termine è di solito riferito alla voce femminile più bassa nel tono di canto o alla voce del cantante maschio che usa la tecnica della contraffazione conosciuta anche come vocalist. Le solite note da record alto coprono tra G sotto la media da C a dieci sotto il centro C. Nella voce più bassa nel loro ambiente sonoro, la voce del cantante contralto maschile è quasi la stessa della voce del tenore. Alcuni cantanti di contralto hanno ambienti più ampi che vanno da C sotto C a C a due ottave superiori, ma come altri cantanti, i tipi di suono contralto vengono identificati attraverso "voci centrali" e non dal loro ambiente. In una banda di 4 cantanti armoniosi, la voce del cantante contralto è la seconda più alta. La nota contralto era originariamente scritta in "alleic klef", ma ora è scritta in "trebal klef".
