葉は、植物の葉の位置の教義です。 葉は茎に無作為に配置されていませんが、むしろそれらの配置は一定の規則に従います。 Leonardo da Vinciは既にこの事実を日記で指摘していましたが、植物学者のKarl Friedrich Schimperは数学的に基本原則を確立した人でした。 彼の研究を通じて、1830年頃には特別な分野、すなわち葉の位置の教義、外国語Phyllotaxisが確立されました。 発散、サイクロス、正書法、および動物学などのいくつかの専門用語は、Schimperによって作成されました。 この分野のパイオニアでもあったAlexander Braunは、彼の研究のためにSchimperによって刺激を受けた。 ブラウンの発見はしばしば、葉の位置に関するSchimper-Braunの理論を参照している。

Die Phyllotaxis ist die Lehre von der Blattstellung von Pflanzen. Blätter sind am Stängel nicht wahllos angeordnet, sondern ihre Anordnung folgt vielmehr bestimmten Regeln. Obwohl bereits Leonardo da Vinci in seinen Tagebüchern auf diese Tatsache hingewiesen hatte, gilt der Botaniker Karl Friedrich Schimper als derjenige, der die dahinterstehenden Gesetzmäßigkeiten mathematisch begründet hat. Durch seine Arbeiten wurde um 1830 ein eigenes Fachgebiet begründet, nämlich die Lehre von der Blattstellung, fremdsprachlich Phyllotaxis. Mehrere noch heute verwendeten Fachbegriffe – so Divergenz, Cyclus, Orthostiche und Parastiche – wurden von Schimper geprägt. Alexander Braun, der ebenfalls auf dem Gebiet Pionierarbeit leistete, wurde durch Schimper zu seinen Forschungen angeregt. Aufgrund von Brauns Entdeckungen wird oft auch von der Schimper-Braun’schen Blattstellungslehre gesprochen.
