蛍光は、光または他の電磁放射を吸収した物質による光の放出である。 また、分子が、例えば自然オーロラ、高高度核爆発、ロケット伝播電子銃実験などで起こるような、活発な電子衝撃によってより高い電子状態に励起される場合にも起こる。 これは発光の一形態である。 ほとんどの場合、放射される光は、吸収された放射線よりも長い波長を有し、したがって、より低いエネルギーを有する。 しかし、吸収された電磁放射が強い場合、1つの電子が2つの光子を吸収することが可能である。 この二光子吸収は、吸収された放射線よりも短波長の放射線の放出につながる可能性がある。 放出される放射線は、「共鳴蛍光」と呼ばれる吸収された放射線と同じ波長のものであってもよい。 蛍光の最も顕著な例は、吸収された放射線がスペクトルの紫外領域にあり、したがって人間の目には見えず、放射された光が可視領域にあるときに生じる。
