A tercet is a poetic stanza consisting of three lines, usually with rhyme. A poem
consisting of such stanzas is called a tercet poem. The three-line structure is
certainly peculiar, lacking the natural symmetry of the couplet or the quatrain.
(sS'ils pouvaient); that of the tercet is comparative (I3ainsi qu'un). The first is
postpositive, whereas the second, incomplete, is an interpolated clause. In the
1847 Le Corsaire text, the punctuation of the sonnet corresponds to this division.
