ユニバーサルタイムは、地球の回転に基づく時間基準です。 グリニッジ標準時（Greenwich Mean Time）の現代継続、すなわちグリニッジの本地経絡における平均日照時間であり、GMTはUTCの同義語として緩やかに使用されることがある。 実際、「普遍的な時間」という表現は、いくつかのバージョンが存在するため、あいまいです。最も一般的に使用されるのはUTCとUT1です。 UTのこれらのバージョンはすべて、遠方の天体との関係での地球の回転に基づいていますが、スケーリングファクターや太陽時間に近づけるためのその他の調整が行われています。
