Pasăre marină polară, de talie mare, cu cioc proeminent, cu aripi mici, modificate în labe înotătoare, cu picioare scurte (având mersul în poziție verticală și legănat), cu penaj alb pe pântece și negru pe spate, care se hrănește cu pește.
