Celibacy jest dobrowolnie niezamężna, abstynentem seksualnym lub obu, zazwyczaj z powodów religijnych. Często wiąże się z rolą urzędnika religijnego lub bhaktę. Protestantyzm dostrzega odwrócenie tej tendencji na Zachodzie i wschodni Kościół Prawosławny nigdy go nie przyjęł. Islamskie postawy wobec celibatu były również skomplikowane; Muhammad potępił to, ale niektóre zamówienia Sufi objąć to.
