Słowo "przemytnik", opisane w języku angielskim od 1529 r., Od średniowiecznego francuskiego kontrebla "przemyt", oznacza każdą pozycję, która ze względu na jej naturę jest nielegalna w posiadaniu lub sprzedaży. Słowo jest również używane jako przymiotnik, znów znaczy "dystrybuowane lub sprzedawane nielegalnie".
