From French, named after Joseph Ignace Guillotin (1738–1814), French physician, who advocated its use in 1789.

Gilotyna jest urządzeniem przeznaczonym do wykonywania egzekucji przez ścinanie. Składa się z wysokiej pionowej ramy, w której ważone i kątowe ostrze jest podnoszone do góry i zawieszone. Osoba skazana jest zamocowana na spodzie ramy, z szyją trzymaną bezpośrednio pod ostrzem. Ostrze zostaje następnie zwolnione, aby szybko opaść i odciąć głowę od ciała.
