Nawyk jest rutyną zachowania, która jest powtarzana regularnie i ma tendencję do nieświadomości. W amerykańskim tekście psychologii jest zdefiniowany w ten sposób: "Z punktu widzenia psychologii jest to raczej mniej lub bardziej stały sposób myślenia, chęci lub uczucia nabytych przez wcześniejsze powtórzenie doświadczenia psychicznego". Zachowanie zachowawcze często nie jest zauważane w osobach je wystawiających, ponieważ podczas podejmowania rutynowych czynności nie trzeba angażować się w samodzielną analizę. Nawyki są czasami obowiązkowe. Procesem, w wyniku którego nowe zachowania stają się automatycznie, jest tworzenie się zwyczaju. Stare przyzwyczajenia są trudne do złamania, a nowe przyzwyczajenia są trudne do wytworzenia, ponieważ powtarzane wzorce zachowań wpisywane są w nasze szlaki neuronowe, ale możliwe jest tworzenie nowych nawyków poprzez powtarzanie. Ponieważ zachowanie powtarza się w spójnym kontekście, narasta wzrost powiązania między kontekstem a działaniem. Zwiększa to automatyczność zachowania w tym kontekście. Funkcjami automatycznego zachowania są wszystkie lub niektóre z: skuteczność, brak świadomości, niezainteresowanie, niekontrolowanie.
Definicja słowa habit w słowniku
Pierwszą definicją nawyku w słowniku jest tendencja lub skłonność do działania w określony sposób. Inną definicją nawyku jest ustalona zwyczajowa, zwyczajowa praktyka itp. Nawyk jest także wyuczoną reakcją behawioralną, która została powiązana z określoną sytuacją, szczególnie często powtarzaną.
