Aparat półokręgowy jest aparatem używającym formatu filmu w połowie zamierzonego formatu ekspozycji. Wspólna odmiana to format 18x24 mm w standardowej 135 filmach. Ta moda zakończyła się, kiedy kamery takie jak Rollei 35 czy Olympus XA wykazały, że możliwe jest zrobienie aparatów tak małych, jak półramki, ale pełne ekspozycje 24x36 mm. Dzięki aparatowi półramki można umieścić dwa razy tyle zdjęć na standardowym rolce filmu. Na przykład 72 ekspozycje na rolce 36-ekspozycji, 48 na 24-ekspozycji, i tak dalej. Ekspozycje mają orientację pionową, w przeciwieństwie do orientacji poziomej lustrzanki cyfrowej 35 mm lub rangefinder.
